Being a single mum of two while working full-time in the demanding world of medical communications is the ultimate juggling act. Think of it like spinning plates – except those plates are stacked with client deadlines, school runs, endless chores, meetings and the occasional meltdown (more often mine than the kids’!).
Now, here’s where Synergy Vision comes in, helping me make the impossible possible. I work fully remotely from my home on the Sussex coast and play the mum game at home. Add to that their genuinely flexible working policy and a 4-day working week option, and suddenly the chaos feels just that bit more manageable. I choose to work 5 condensed days, usually logging off around 4pm, so I can still make the school run and keep those plates spinning.
Over time, I’ve discovered a few strategies for getting through the day without losing my mind (or at least not completely):
- Set clear boundaries
Work stops when work stops. No more checking emails after hours (unless it’s an emergency, but even then, maybe take a deep breath first). - Fit work around life, not the other way round
Despite Synergy Vision offering a 4-day week, I opt for 5 shorter days. Giving me the chance to finish in time for the school run. - Don’t feel guilty for taking breaks – you need them!
Whether they’re quick resets and a cuppa, or a longer break for some much-needed shut-eye, I take breaks as and when I need around my meetings and client priorities, making sure the time is made up later in the week. - Take advantage of the peace and quiet
I start my days earlier, to take advantage of a quiet house to tackle those big tasks. Then the afternoons are normally reserved for lighter admin, once the kids are back and the noise recommences. - Don’t be too hard on yourself
Life’s not always a 50/50 split. Sometimes work takes over; sometimes family time is the priority. Flexibility is key (and probably the only thing keeping me sane).
Without Synergy Vision’s flexible and remote working policies, I don’t know how I’d juggle MedComms and parenting my two little’uns. As Employee Owners, we all play an active hand in shaping the company, leading to a culture built on trust: my colleagues trust me to deliver in the hours that work for me and my family, and I trust them to respect my boundaries. That’s a rare (and wonderful) thing!
So, here’s my conclusion: work hard, parent harder, and never underestimate the power of a good cup of tea. Or three.
